“Help a Reporter Out” Actually Helps PR Execs Even More
Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 by Delisa Davis ReavisThere is an age-old debate that I often get into with my journalist friends: “Which comes first, the pitch or the story idea?”
I, like most PR people, think approximately 75% of what we see in media today is the result of a hard-working, savvy PR pro. Said journalist friends find PR people annoying and refer to them as the telemarketers of the media world. (sigh)
Well, I’ve discovered a place where publicists and reporters can play nicely together, enjoy each others’ company and help each other out. It’s called “Help a Reporter Out” and it’s a Web site/listserv developed by entrepreneur, adventurist and all-around nice guy Peter Shankman. (Not to mention my newest friend on Facebook!)
The site offers an online form that journalists can fill out to query thousands of publicists and specialists for the most unusual of requests. Looking for an octogenarian alligator wrangler in Kansas? Someone on the list probably knows one, or knows someone who knows one.
So, I immediately demanded that my reporter friends join, and I check the queries every day should someone need a specialty that our clients provide.
As for what comes first…with Help a Reporter Out, it really doesn’t matter.
(Though I still secretly think pitch first.)
